About Mayer

Near the center of Arizona, in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains, lies the small, unincorporated town of Mayer. With a population of less than 1500 people, Mayer remains unknown to almost all but its residents and neighbors, but its history is as lively and resonant as many larger cities.

Mayer includes three sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places namely Mayer Apartments, Mayer Business Block, and Mayer Red Brick Schoolhouse.

History

Mayer Arizona is located near the center of the state. It was founded and named by Joseph Mayer and his wife, Sarah (Sadie) Belle Wilbur Mayer, who purchased the “Big Bug Stage Station,” a stage stop on the Black Canyon Stage Line from Prescott to Phoenix, in 1882 for $1,200 in gold. Joe Mayer then proceeded to found a town, where he was the major player until his death in 1909.

Even after Joe Mayer’s death, the Mayer family, which included daughters Mary Belle (Mamie), Martha Gertrude (Martie) and Winifred Lucille (Winnie) and son Wilbur Joseph (Burr), continued the family tradition of entrepreneurship and community service. Direct descendants of Joe and Sadie Mayer continued to live in Mayer until the death of Winifred’s younger son in 2006. There are also other stories and characters to tell about in the history of Mayer, and many families who settled in Mayer decades ago are still there – an inextricable part of the history of a place and time in central Arizona which lives on today.
